Guided In The Moment (And The Middle Of The Night)

I woke up to the sound of my husband snoring around 4:30am today (the struggle is real dealing with a snoring spouse).  I tossed and turned for a while and then just settled into my thoughts.  Although I wasn’t feeling anxious, my mind was jumping around a bit – thinking of different activities to do with the kids today, etc.

After an hour I moved downstairs to the couch.  There’s something comforting about being able to lay and look out the window.  I closed my eyes and told myself to find the space of peace I find during meditation.  My breath slowed, my mind followed.

Give This A Try – A Meditation for Sitting In The Power

Below is a meditation I do daily that grounds me and reminds me that I’m always with my Higher Self, Guides, and Source/Light/God.  This type of meditation is also referred to as Sitting In The Power.  Or sitting in YOUR power.  This simply means you are elevating your vibration to where you are no longer “your body” or your “human story”.  You are remembering who you really are and you feel the vibration of love and light instead of the denser vibrations of Earth.

Using Tibetan Bowls To Center Into Your Heart

It seems that “life” overtook me in August and unfortunately that meant putting my blog on the back burner while cabin trips, camping, photography shoots, and life with a husband and two kids took most of my time and energy.

Without much time to myself, I end up craving those few and far between moments of being alone; time to be still with myself and process all that’s going on both outside and in.  I find that when life gets busy, I end up being more and more inside my mind, or my left brain, to be exact.  A little less into my creative and intuitive right brain side – the side that I find I prefer more.  Planning and packing for trips, and keeping two kids entertained every day, as well as maybe reading too many news stories…I was finding myself too in my head and not enough in my heart.  The good thing is that I can now realize when this happens, and do my best to turn it around.  Over and over again I learn, that if I don’t take care of myself – through meditation, time alone, or yoga – then the whole family feels the effects.  I know my husband can vouch for this!

So I found a great, and quick, 10 minute Tibetian bowl heart mediation that I listened to over and over this past month.  What I love about sound healing (through the bowls in this case) is that it truly gives your mind a break.  Unlike a guided mediation where you are visualizing and following along with spoken words, the tones of the bowls do all the work for you.  We as souls and bodies are essentially made up of moving sounds waves that vibrate.  In this way, when we become out of balance (too much in our head or not enough in our lower chakras to ground us) then we experience inbalance in our lives either through unwanted emotions, sickness, depression, etc.

This is where Tibetian bowls come in.  By simply listening and relaxing into your breath, your energy field will begin to resonate with the tones and in turn give your energy body a sort of “tune up.”  I love that you can actually feel the vibration of these tones and you will actually feel different after listening to them.  Your body will begin to vibrate as it should; centered, calm, and alert.

Please listen with headphones on to get the full effect.  I listen sitting up, with both feet on the ground, to allow the vibrations to move up and down my spine.  It’s only 10 minutes, so it’s simple to fit in.  This meditation nicely merges the heart chakra with the mind.  These two should flow together – in harmony – rather than one completely overtaking the other.

It’s so important to remain centered in our heart chakra.  This space is our connection to our Divine self, as well as the higher realms, and brings us insight and peace in the moment despite all that is going on around us.  Too often the everyday ups and downs of life on Earth can take us over (as my Summer proved!).  Yet by gently reminding ourselves that we are beings of sound and light, we are able to live a life filled with more compassion and grace.

Nicki

Creating Change Through “I Am” Energy

“Worrying is like praying for something you don’t want”

As you begin to notice your inner dialogue, either through mindful awareness or mediation, you start to be more cognizant of your “self talk”. What I noticed after detaching from my constant mind chatter was how often I made firm, repetitive statements not only to myself but out loud to others – that I didn’t necessarily want to be making. Statements such as:
I’m so tired
I’m so stressed out
I’ll never be able to do that

These thoughts are often so fleeting or ingrained in us that we might not even notice how often we think or say them out loud. The neural pathways in our brain become used to these “I am” statements that we tell ourselves every day, and it becomes very hard to break free of them – even if they serve no benefit.

This often isn’t our fault. The brain is a huge computer and while useful, it also takes a bit of work to change long ingrained thought patterns. Those neurotransmitters work hard to make pathways that make our life easier. So while it’s great to know “don’t touch a hot oven,” it’s not so great to “know” yourself as “I’m fearful” or “I’m stressed” or “I’m unhealthy” – or whatever negative statement you might repeat to yourself consciously or unconsciously.

Why does the brain often get stuck in the negative vs. the positive? A lot of it has to do with our unconscious “fight or flight” instincts that tell us we must struggle in life; for food, or shelter, or safety. This is in our energy fields from our more primitive lifetimes and since the brain is hardwired for our survival – it’s primed to keep us alive in scarcity (even if we have plenty). This is why people often think “I don’t have enough” or “I’m not enough” or “something bad might happen to me”.

This leads to why I love meditating to “I Am” statements or mantras. By consciously feeling the I AM statement you make, repeating it in a mindful way, and energetically sending that signal through your brain, your aura, and the Universe, you can alter your neural pathways, and in turn change your perception of yourself and your reality.

As a small example, I had a terrible cold last week and had to drop everything because I felt so sick. Of course all day I was saying out loud “I’m so sick” and “I feel so awful”. These are pretty firm “I am” statements. And my mind, body, and energy field were responding with “yes.” So I was wallowing in that low vibration and “stuck” in the sickness.  After some needed time to rest, I started to be proactive and instead would say “I’m healing from this cold” or “I’m feeling better”. Even when I wasn’t. Amazingly, that simple shift in verbiage helped get my energy into a forward momentum of healing vs. stagnant illness.

This isn’t simply a positive affirmation – you are intentionally feeling the vibration of what you desire, releasing it, and experiencing the results over time. Not to get too woo-woo, but imagine yourself stepping into a new reality as you make your “I Am” statement. A reality that’s right here, yet in a different and higher vibration. Where that sickness doesn’t exist anymore.  Some people refer to this as Quantum Jumping.

Whatever you state in the affirmative – expect it back. There’s real truth to the saying “fake it ’till you make it”

This can be used on a small scale for annoyances like a cold or aches and pains, or for more in-depth things like losing weight, getting a new job, or dealing with chronic disease.  For instance, rather than saying “I need to lose weight” – change the wording and simply say “I am at a healthy weight”.  Your brain and energy field don’t know this isn’t true – and stating where you want to be then gets that momentum going.  Change your energy to think you are already where you want to be – for example, at your ideal weight.  Then rather than struggling, your results will unfold with divine timing: smoothly and in your best interest.

Below is a simple mediation you can try to encourage your brain to make new neural pathways and to create or manifest something energetically in your life. You can invite whatever you’d like into your life and the Universe will always respond with “Yes”. That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of what you’re inviting in! Is it for your best interest or not?  Send out enough positive or negative “I Am” statements and that will be what you see around you.

It can take at least 3 weeks to form long lasting thought pattern changes in the brain – so keep at it. While energy, chakra, and aura shifts can occur in one mediation it does take longer to train the brain. And both are part of the process.

Here we go:
-Find a quiet place to sit, with your feet on the ground, for at least 10 min.

-Take a few deep breaths into your belly and fill your whole body with air, then slowly exhale

-Relax your body, releasing any tension you’re holding

-As you exhale, say in your mind (or out loud if you prefer) your “I Am” statement
For example, “I am healthy”. Feel what this statement means to you and do your best to imagine it’s already true and it is your reality.

-Then as you inhale, simply state “I Am”

Repeat this to yourself over and over with each inhale and exhale. You’re now energetially telling the Universe/Source/God what you want.  Exhale and send the thought energy out – then as you inhale – you receive that new energy into your body as an affirmative acceptance: “I Am”.

As you make this a daily practice, think of each new day as a blank slate. You have the power to alter the energy of the day in whichever way you’d like. Each time you mindfully change your self talk, the easier it gets. Before you know it, your new neural pathways and your vibrant, open energy field will seek out and welcome the experiences, the people, and the lessons that fit in with and support your “I Am” statements. Your life takes on a magnetic quality, where all your “I Am” intentions are played out in the story you are creating that is your life.

Get creative with it and see what you can welcome into your reality…

Nicki

A Place In The Sun

If you’ve ever thought about meditating but aren’t sure where to begin, this is a perfect post for you. Or maybe thinking of meditating makes you want to shove a fork in your eye. Never fear! Everyone can learn to mediate. But why should you? Mediation is a time to connect to your inner self, slow down the constant chatter of your mind, and tune into the high frequency of JOY that is your Divine Self.

It’s been said that prayer is a form of asking & talking to God/The Universe, while mediation is a form of listening. For me, meditation is a way to rise above whatever is going on in my Earth life, and go within to reconnect and listen to my higher self; the small, still place within each of us. To me it feels like being surrounded in all encompassing Love and Light. A Place In The Sun.

Many times people start to incorporate meditation into their life after something uncomfortable arises in their physical being, urging them to slow down and listen to their Divine Self. Do you suffer from anxiety? Restlessness? Depression? Chronic pain? Dis-ease? These are just some energy blockers that can be alleviated through mediation.  For instance, I used to be an extreme insomniac. It wouldn’t be abnormal for me to get only 2-3 hours of sleep a night simply because I could not turn my thoughts off. My tiredness caused some anxiety and I didn’t want to go on medication, so I decided to try meditation. Once I got the hang of it, I was sleeping better within weeks. Years later, I cherish my daily mediations and rarely suffer from insomnia. My kids sure do love to wake me up the middle of the night though.

Alright, now for the How To part. If you’re a beginner, or fine tuning your practice, I’m going to introduce 3 simple ways to meditate. But before we get to those, there are just a couple things to note that will help you get into the right mindset before your meditation:

  • First, find a quiet place where you’ll be uninterrupted. If you have kids and you don’t have a quiet cave in your backyard you can hide in, this might mean setting your alarm before they get up. I know, I know…that’s the worst sometimes, but once you’re up it’ll be worth it. Or sneak a mediation in at your desk on your lunch break. I do mine either in the morning and/or when my daughter is napping in the afternoon.
  • Second, sit on a comfortable chair or couch, with your feet flat the floor. Or sit on the floor cross legged. I recommend sitting up with a straight spine so you don’t drift off to sleep, and you want your feet or tush on the floor so you are grounding your energy.
  • Now it’s time to relax. Take one slow, deep breath through your nose to the count of 4. Really fill your whole body with fresh air and energy. HOLD the breath for 4 counts, then slowly exhale through your mouth for 8 counts. If your mind is restless and full of thoughts, imagine as you breathe in that you are breathing in white light full of calming, healing energy, and breathing out any negative energy and worries. Notice any parts of your body that are tense and breathe into them so you are fully relaxed.
Do this breathing exercise 3 times. You’re probably already feeling better!

Now here are 3 ways to try meditating – experiment to find what you like best. Or come up with your own! I will discuss more ways to meditate in future posts.

  1. Focus On Your Breath
This is exactly as it sounds. Notice how your chest rises and falls as you breathe at a normal, relaxed pace. Or feel the air going in and out of your nostrils. Another great way to think of this is that it’s not you breathing, but rather let yourself “be breathed”. Notice how you don’t have to exert any work, there is an unknown force breathing for you. Notice the air coming in and out without having to do anything. Be a detached observer of your breath.
  2. Repeat A Mantra
Some people like to have a mantra (word or phrase) that they can repeat in their head. This is a nice way to focus on something and have as an anchor to return to when your mind starts to wander. As it wanders, just acknowledge the thought but do not get invested in it, and gently move back to the mantra. A nice mantra to start with is “I am” or “I am Here.”
  3. Imagine You’re At The Beach
The great thing about your mind is if you can imagine something, the brain doesn’t know that it’s not actually happening. Your body will respond AS IF it is. So imagine you are sitting on a beach and your mind and body will react as if you really are. I often imagine myself sitting on the sand looking out at the ocean. Now imagine your breath is matching up with the rhythm of the waves gently crashing into shore. You don’t have to do anything, the waves just keep coming in and out – just like your breath.

It’s normal for your mind to wander when you meditate. Many people think they aren’t able to meditate because they can’t slow down their “monkey mind” that’s chattering nonstop. The truth is, you will always have thoughts arise when you meditate; you are a living, breathing human being after all! The point is not to be completely void of thoughts – the point is to OBSERVE the thoughts in a detached way. As you find yourself thinking or feeling a strong emotion, just acknowledge the feeling or thought, then go back to focusing on your breath, your mantra, or the waves. Then when another thought arises, observe it, say “hello” and “goodbye” to it. Don’t get caught up in it. Soon you will incorporate a great asset into your life: that any thought, any emotion, any worry can arise from your endless mind chatter – but the thoughts do not control you. You have the ability to observe them, while still keeping your inner Light and calmness, and remaining in the moment.

Congratulations on taking the step to bring this powerful practice into your life. Honor yourself and do this every day for a month. Even if it’s for just 10-15 minutes a day, keep at it until it becomes a habit. You will feel and notice the affects – I promise you. Soon you might find that your daily mediation is the highlight of your day!

Until next time, below is a video of Stevie Wonder, doing a perfect job singing what I tried to convey in words today – that no matter what is happing around you, there is always A Place In The Sun inside of you.  Enjoy!

Nicki
